GALGIRIYAWA

Many interesting archaeological sites lie within a distance of 15 miles from the Galgamuwa resthouse. One such is Galgiriyawa, which lies in the range of hills that extends 10 miles north from the 12th milepost on the
Galgamuwa - Nikawewa road. In those hills are six or seven separate groups of caves. One of them, Galgiriyawa, dates from the 2nd century BC or earlier. Indeed Galgiriyawa, it is suggested, is the probable true site of the Vessagiriya monastery founded lay King Devanampiyatissa in the 3rd century BC.
